Archangels

FROM A HOMILY ON SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT, POPE

You should be aware that the word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who proclaim message of supreme importance are call archangels.
And so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages.
Some angels are given proper names to denote the service they are empowered to perform. In that holy city, where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known. But personal names are assigned to some, not because they could  not be known without them, but rather to denote their ministry when they come among us. Thus, Michael means “Who is like God?” ; Gabriel is “The strength of God” ; and Raphael is “ God’s remedy.”
Whenever some act of wondrous power must be performed, Michael is sent, so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by His superior power. So also our ancient foe desired in his pride to be like God , saying: I will scale the heavens; above the stars of God I will set up my throne; I will be like the most high(Is 14:13.14). He will be allowed to remain in power until the end of the world when he will be destroyed in the final punishment. Then, he will fight with the archangel Michael, as we are told by john: Michael and his angels battled against the dragon (Rev 12:7).
So too Gabriel, who is called God’s strength, was sent to Mary. He came to announce the One who appeared as a humble man to quell the cosmic powers. Thus God’s strength announced the coming of the Lord of the heavenly powers, mighty in battle.
Raphael means, as I have said, God’s remedy, for when he touched  Tobit’s eye in order to cure him, he banished the darkness of his blindness. Thus, since he is the healer, he is rightly called God’s remedy.

Journalism Class

What do you say to STRICT ? HARD WORK? NERVOUS WRECK? That’s my definition of Journalism class. My teacher is Mr. Paul Geraño and yes he is STRICT, in real sense which is why I am a NERVOUS WRECK before, during and after his class. And don’t even let me get started on the word HARD WORK. We do so much thinking in that class that my brain is so sore!! Talk about manual labor for my brain! But on a more positive note, I think this is what a class should be…why? Am I crazy? No, It’s because in my Journalism class I learn a lot. My teacher is so serious about teaching us about grammar and he is careful about his pronunciations. That makes me also a serious and responsible student too!

What makes this class interesting is the very creative visual aid materials that he presents.  He often makes use of the MDFT for a more interactive approach. This makes all of us wide awake, attentive and makes our learning fun.  Journalism is not just about grammar.  Religion is also integrated with this class because our class cannot start without saying a prayer.  And what’s nice with prayer now is that it is usually in the form of music or videos.  After our class, Sir Geraño would give us a quiz on current events to see if  we are updated with what’s happening around us. As for some personalities – Sir has his own “idol”.   It’s no other than our fellow Ilongga – Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago. It’s all because of the ways she talks.  As for Sir Geraño, he’s the kind of teacher I like – strict but has a sense of humor and learning is never boring…

Thank you sir for a new kind of learning. ♥♥
