SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT: JOY

“ IF , AS HEROD, WE FILL OUR  LIVES WITH THINGS, AND AGAIN WITH THINGS; WE CONSIDER OURSELVES SO UNIMPORTANT THAT WE MUST FILL EVERY MOMENT OF OUR LIVES WITH ACTION, WHEN  WILL WE HAVE TIME TO MAKE THE LONG, SLOW JOURNEY ACROSS THE DESERT AS DID THE MAGI?  OR SIT AND WATCH THE STARS AS DID THE SHEPHERDS?  OR BROOD OVER THE COMING  OF THE CHILD AS DID MARY?  FOR  EACH  OF US THERE IS A DESERT TO TRAVEL  A STAR TO DISCOVER.  AND A BEING WITHIN OURSELVES TO BRING TO LIFE.”

The Whisper of Christmas

The Whisper of Christmas
Joe E. Pennel, Jr., Nashville, Upper Room, 1984, p. 61

"There is no evidence of any kind regarding the date of Jesus’ birth. His nativity began to be celebrated on Dec. 25 in Rome during the early part of the fourth century (AD 336) as a Christian counterpart to the pagan festival, popular among the worshipers of Mithras, called Sol Invictis, theUnconquerable Sun. At the very moment when the days are the shortest and darkness seems to have conquered light, the sun passes its nadir. Days grow longer, and although the cold will only increase for quite a long time, the ultimate conquest of winter is sure. This astronomical process is a parable of the career of the Incarnate One. At the moment when history is blackest, and in the least expected and obvious place, the Son of God is born…"

6.  ENJOY!!-  THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH ANY KIND OF ACTIVITY IS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE HAVING FUN WHILE DOING IT BECAUSE THEN YOU WON’T EVEN KNOW IT’S OVER TILL IT’S OVER!  HAVE FUN!!

Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath

The circle of the wreath reminds us of God Himself, His eternity and endless mercy, which has no beginning or end. The green of the wreath speaks of the hope that we have in God, the hope of newness, of renewal, of eternal life. Candles symbolize the light of God coming into the world through the birth of His son. The four outer candles represent the period of waiting during the four Sundays of Advent, which themselves symbolize the four centuries of waiting between the prophet Malachi and the birth of Christ.
The colors of the candles vary with different traditions, but there are usually three purple or blue candles, corresponding to the sanctuary colors of Advent, and one pink or rose candle. One of the purple candles is lighted the first Sunday of Advent, a Scripture is read, a short devotional or reading is given, and a prayer offered. On subsequent Sundays, previous candles are relighted with an additional one lighted. The pink candle is usually lighted on the third Sunday of Advent.
The first candle is traditionally the candle of Expectation or Hope (or in some traditions, Prophecy). This draws attention to the anticipation of the coming of an Anointed One, a Messiah, that weaves its way like a golden thread through Old Testament history.

The third candle, usually for the Third Sunday of Advent, is traditionally Pink or Rose, and symbolizes Joyat the soon Advent of the Christ.  It marks a shift from the more solemn tone of the first two Sundays of Advent that focus on Preparation and Hope, to a more joyous atmosphere of anticipation and expectancy.
The center candle is white and is called the Christ Candle.  It is traditionally lighted on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
The central location of the Christ Candle reminds us that the incarnation is the heart of the season, giving light to the world.

Begin With Advent

by Victor Hoagland, C.P.

Begin with Advent, the four weeks before Christmas. It is a time of preparation, waiting and hope. The Advent liturgy resounds with the longing cries of the Hebrew prophets, the voice of Jesus, and John the Baptist's preaching that the Lord is near. Hear their message still ringing through today's dark winters.
.
"Jesus said to his disciples: 'Be constantly on the watch! Stay awake!...You do not know when the Master of the house is coming.'"Mark. 13:33 First Sunday of Advent
When John the Baptizer made his appearance as a preacher in the desert of Judea, this was his them: Reform your lives. The reign of God is at hand!" Mt. 3:1 Second Sunday of Advent
John's disciples said to Jesus, "Are you 'He who is to come' or do we look for another?" In reply, Jesus said: "Tell John what you hear and see: the blind recover their sight, cripples walk, lepers are cured, and the poor have good news preached to them..." Lk. 3:10 Third Week of Advent
The angel Gabriel said to Mary, "Do not fear, Mary, you shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus. Great will be his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High..." Lk. 1 Fourth Sunday of Advent

WARNING……WARNING: ADVENT VIRUS
Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.
Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus:

  • A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
  • An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
  • A loss of interest in judging other people.
  • A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
  • A loss of interest in conflict.
  • A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)
  • Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
  • Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
  • Frequent attacks of smiling.
  • An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
  • An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.
Please send this warning out to all your friends. This virus can and has affected many systems. Some systems have been completely cleaned out because of it.

Preparing For A Halloween Affair

Sem Break is next week! I'm looking forward to Halloween.  But wait just a sec... I've some questions at the back of my head I want cleared : Are we doing it right? Do we even know our history? I'm going back for a lil bit of checking so that when Halloween comes I'm on the right track with my celebrations.

All Saints' Day (in the Roman Catholic Church officially the Solemnity of All Saints and also called All Hallows or Hallowmas]), often shortened to All Saints, is a solemnity celebrated on 1 November by parts of Western Christianity, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Halloween and Its Christian Roots
When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? For a lot of people, Halloween has become synonymous with candy, costumes, scary stuff, witches, ghosts and pumpkins. But do you know the Christian connection to the holiday?
The true origins of Halloween lie with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany. For the Celts, November 1 marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter. The night before the new year, they celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the deadincluding ghosts, goblins and witchesreturned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.
When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cidertraditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallows Even or holy evening. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day.
The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints, which reminds us that the Church is not bound by space or time.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the communion of saints a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those who are expiating their sins in purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is, too, an abundant exchange of all good things (#1475).

How Halloween Can Be Redeemed
by Page McKean Zyromski
Halloween has grown into a major secular holiday in American culture. But for those who don't value devotion to the saints, the Eve has become "hollow" instead of "hallow." The purpose behind it has been lost'like celebrating New Year's Eve without a New Year's Day. Take away the saints and our beliefs about the dignity and destiny of human beings, and the only thing left is pre-Christian superstition regarding the dead.
Among many Christians, there has been concern that things have gotten out of hand. After all, doesn't Halloween glorify evil? Is it right to send our children out as devils and vampires, or is it better to emphasize the saints, whose nearly forgotten feast day is the reason for Halloween? Hallow is the same word for "holy" that we find in the Lord's Prayer, and e'en is a contraction of "evening." The wordHalloween itself is a shortened form of "All Hallows Eve," the day before All Saints Day. In this Update we'll consider how Catholics can "redeem" Halloween. This holiday, properly understood and celebrated with all of its fun trappings, can be a way for us to deepen our understanding of our faith. The key to this understanding is close at hand for Catholics in our love of the communion of saints.
Martyr means 'witness'
Until the ninth century the Church celebrated the popular feast of All Saints on May 13th, during the season of joy after the Resurrection. This is the light in which we see all the faithful who have died, especially those whose witness to Christ is an inspiration. In 835 the date was deliberately changed to November 1 to Christianize the existing pagan time for remembering the dead'to bring light to the darkness, and hope to the most basic of human fears.
Before canonization was ever thought of, before the New Testament books even took shape, the human desire to remember deceased loved ones surfaced. And these were no ordinary loved ones, these were brothers and sisters who had died in Christ, as witnesses to Christ. (The Greek wordmartyr simply means "witness.") Their death was victory, not defeat; celebration, not mourning.
The same way people gather today at the site of a tragedy on its anniversary to talk to each other and to reporters, the first Christians gathered on the anniversary of a martyr's death to remember it the way they knew best: with the "breaking of the bread." They retold the stories to inspire each other at a time when faith meant persecution and more martyrdom. Not even death could break the unity in Jesus which Paul had named "the Body of Christ."
Anniversaries of local and well-known martyrs peppered the calendar. Then a pragmatic question arose: What honor should be given to martyrs whose names were unknown? Many Christians were thrown to the lions for witnessing to their faith, not all of them known to the community. By the mid-fourth century a feast of "All Martyrs" appeared on local calendars. As persecutions grew less frequent, the feast was extended to include non-martyr "witnesses," Christians whose lives were "the gospel in action," as St. Francis de Sales would later call the saints.
Do we "worship" or "adore" our beloved saints, as some non-Catholics think? Not at all. We honor them and learn from their example; adoration belongs to God alone. We ask the saints to pray for us the same way we might ask a good friend to pray. A favorite quotation about prayer begins, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name" (Matthew 18:20). The "two or three" aren't necessarily limited to the living. It's comforting to have friends always available to pray with you, a whole "cloud of witnesses," in fact! (see Hebrews 12:1).
Halloween is like our Mardi Gras before a very serious Lent. We should be able to laugh at the dark side and dress up in costumes and have parties. Let's reclaim our heritage with all the story power, creativity and joyous good fun that we can. Let's use it to help us become the saints we are each called to be.
Halloween is a victory celebration, after all!

Wow!  Good thing I did my checkup. I'm done being scared, what with all the Vampire movies out there these days.  I want to be different... I want to do what I was born to do (Joan of Arc)
I want to be Holy! I'm aimin' to be a Saint! Why not? It's my birthright! Happy Hallow's Eve here I come!

Letters For Joy Luck Club

(An assignment in CAE class for the book "Joy Luck Club")

What if I could write a letter to one mother And daughter from the book?  This is how it would go:

Dear An-mei Sue,

Who is the ghost that you are not allowed to speak of , to ask about  or even to encounter in your dreams?  You have been forced to live on stories, stories which you thought were frightening ,your popo’s stories.but later you found out through these stories that you were very precious to her, for she didn’t want you to be taken away by the ghost. Yet you think of her, the ghost, for you knew her in your heart.  They said she was your mother but no more for she shamed the family and became a concubine. But why can’t you hate her?
Why do you have that scar on your neck?  The scar that tells of a time when your mother came for you and you wanted to be with her.  But the boiling water, the pain and the choking stopped you.  Did you die that night?  Popo made you will yourself to live because if you died you will be forgotten.  The ghost will no longer come for you, no longer remember you.  Popo was smart you came back from the other world because you loved her, the ghost and popo.
You never knew what true love was but then one day you saw it.  The day of popo’s  dying time. You saw your mother.   She cut a piece of her flesh to save popo, to save her mother.  It was then that you  knew that your mother is in your bones.  The worth of the pain is the same as the worth of the love.  It was then that you knew how your mother  committed suicide so you will not live a life of second rate, to stand up for yourself and be strong.
What are these scars on your neck?  They are scars that bind your body to your mothers pain and you become one.  “Even though I was young, I could see the pain of the flesh and the WORTH of the pain.”

Dear Waverly Jong,

What was the gift of strength your mother taught you?  The power of the wind.  It made you invincible and you became a good chess player.  Your mother displays all the trophies you won from each tournament after she cleans them one by one. But why do you resent her hovering over you as you practiced each game like a protective ally.  And on days  that she brings you to the market to tell everyone that you are her daughter.  On that day you defied your mother and refused to be controlled.  You  stopped playing chess and in your anger you did not see the your mother’s  pride was your mother’s support and love for you.

Divorced and now living with a man whose love is pure and who knows nothing about Chinese culture.  Now an adult why is it that your mother can make you see black when there was once white?  Why is she always able to find your weakness?  Why did she always find wrong  in all that you do?  Will she ever accept Rich your new partner?  Then you saw it, your  mother’s severity is her love and concern for you.
AT last  you see yourself going to china together with your mother and rich.  And finally it makes perfect sense…”The three of us, leaving our differences behind stepping on the plane together, sitting side by side, lifting off, moving west to reach the east.”

Archangels

FROM A HOMILY ON SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT, POPE

You should be aware that the word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who proclaim message of supreme importance are call archangels.
And so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages.
Some angels are given proper names to denote the service they are empowered to perform. In that holy city, where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known. But personal names are assigned to some, not because they could  not be known without them, but rather to denote their ministry when they come among us. Thus, Michael means “Who is like God?” ; Gabriel is “The strength of God” ; and Raphael is “ God’s remedy.”
Whenever some act of wondrous power must be performed, Michael is sent, so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by His superior power. So also our ancient foe desired in his pride to be like God , saying: I will scale the heavens; above the stars of God I will set up my throne; I will be like the most high(Is 14:13.14). He will be allowed to remain in power until the end of the world when he will be destroyed in the final punishment. Then, he will fight with the archangel Michael, as we are told by john: Michael and his angels battled against the dragon (Rev 12:7).
So too Gabriel, who is called God’s strength, was sent to Mary. He came to announce the One who appeared as a humble man to quell the cosmic powers. Thus God’s strength announced the coming of the Lord of the heavenly powers, mighty in battle.
Raphael means, as I have said, God’s remedy, for when he touched  Tobit’s eye in order to cure him, he banished the darkness of his blindness. Thus, since he is the healer, he is rightly called God’s remedy.
